Some telecom companies in Europe are making big moves to gain more customers by offering world travelers flat-rate mobile broadband abroad. The new service would give subscribers data access in dozens of countries. The flat-rate fee would be charged per megabyte of data used. While the rate is higher than in-country rates for data, it is still cheaper than most rates charged by major carriers for international roaming. The price will still be too high for some travelers, but it is a first step toward what is likely to be a trend in price declines for mobile broadband services abroad. As trends show Europeans continuing to increase their overseas travel, more are taking their laptops, including Linux laptop computers, with them than at any time before. Dependable Internet access is viewed as a necessity by most business travelers and many leisure travelers as well, so the service will be marketed heavily to these demographics in Europe.
